Friday night I plunged into another game of Paths of Glory. Is this the fourth or fifth in a row? I can't remember. This time, it's the historical variant. I'm the allies. It's feeling very historical, if you take my meaning.
Finally, on Sunday, I stopped by the Buckeye Game Fest on to scan the vendor tables and say hello to a friend. While chatting near the GMT table, my eye landed on an "in-the-shrink" copy of Empire of the Sun for $60, which I scooped up. My Friday-night antagonist ColdBarca and I have plans to play this one. A couple of the other burnt-out-by-Sunday-afternoon wargamers loitering around the GMT table warned me about the complexity of ETOS, but right now I'm in the mood for something in the Pacific. Something meaty. ColdBarca and I will pick a book to go with this one. I'm thinking Retribution by Max Hastings.
The con looked like fun. I can imagine blowing a weekend at a con like that in about 12-15 years.

Retribution is a good idea. Although there are several possible choices. Shattered Sword is another (of your) good idea(s).
Some other good one-volume histories on the Pacific War as well: Toland, Costello...
Congrats on finishing up the artwork on your first wargame project!
Send me a write-up of Shield Wall and let's get a preview over at GN!
Thanks, Brant! Will do.
