That is not to say I haven't been indulging in my favorite hobby. I'm having a blast playing Clash of Monarchs again via VASSAL and I am knee-deep in another art project for White Dog Games. It just seems that I have to choose between doing something game related or blogging about games.
To get back into the swim of blogging, I will list some of my activities since the beginning of the year.
Clash of Monarchs
Playing a favorite game against my favorite opponent, I finally get to be Prussia and, assured of certain victory, I have grabbed the wheel and driven this high-powered army straight off a cliff. Charles absolutely crushed Frederick outside of Prague. Silesia is almost entirely in the hands of the Empire. And in Bizzaro-World-fashion, my Brits and Hanoverians are acting hapless against the French, who roam Westphalia like lions. Still it's good fun and I am enjoying myself.
|Prussia is doing so poorly, even the Saxons parade insolently before Frederick the Great.|
White Dog is going to publish a game on the Baron's War and I am doing the artwork. Knights! There wasn't anything I liked more as a boy and this project is bringing back my fondness for the topic. Below is the map - an early draft. I think the St. Pancras Priory needs some beefing up - it was an immense complex by this time.
|The Battle of Lewes - this is a low-res sketch-up. Upon integration of designer comments, a print-ready map will be composed.|
I had the clever idea that I would start making my own paint. I ordered pigment and acrylic medium from the Kremer Pigments store in NYC, and engaged in doing what seemed to be a natural thing for someone with my interests. (Did I mention that since my spell of unemployment last summer I've started working for an actual decorative paint manufacturer?) Anyway, it is harder to get good paint batched-up than I imagined. I think I need to drop $60 on a decent muller if I'm going to get the quality where I want it. Still, my Warhammer 40K chaps will have some accents on their gear painted with my home-brewed concoctions... if I ever finish painting them.
Hot damn! Could this be the *real* reason I haven't been blogging? Two very addictive games have me in thrall: Summoner Wars and Ace Patrol. Both are light, fun, and too easy to pick up and while away 20 minutes of spare time.
Some random thoughts in my head coalesced around a wargame idea involving a standard deck of playing cards. I have developed a draft and played it. I had fun. The whole thing sits in a bag on a shelf. Where it will likely remain.
